Regulations for sampling construction materials are specified in national and international standards, ensuring the representativeness, objectivity and accuracy of testing samples. Sampling construction materials is one of the very important tasks in the construction field. If sampling is not done according to standard regulations, it will greatly affect the results of assessing the quality of that material and the assessment of the safety of the project. Below are some popular standards in Vietnam related to sampling construction materials:
GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR SAMPLING OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
- The test sample must be representative of the batch of material to be tested.
- Sampling must be done according to correct procedures to avoid errors that affect the results.
- After taking samples, they must be preserved and transported properly so as not to change the properties of the material.
SAMPLING PROCEDURE FOR EACH TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
1- CEMENT:
- Construction cement sampling must comply with Vietnamese standard TCVN 141:2023
- Take samples from at least 20 bags (for bagged cement) or from different points in the silo (for bulk cement).
- Minimum sample weight: 10 kg.
- After taking the cement sample, it should be stored in a moisture-proof bag or sealed box, clearly labeled: Type of cement; Origin (manufacturer name, batch number, date of manufacture); Date, time and location of sampling; Sampler. Samples must be stored in a dry place, avoiding direct contact with water or high humidity.
- Chemical composition testing: TCVN 6017:2015
- Physical properties testing:
- Compressive and bending strength testing: TCVN 6016:2011
- Plasticity and workability testing: TCVN 3121-3:2022
- Check the level of impurities: TCVN 141:2023
2- CONSTRUCTION SAND:
- Construction sand sampling must comply with Vietnamese standards such as: TCVN 7572-2:2006 and TCVN 10796:2016
- Samples must be taken from many different locations within the sand pile.
- Minimum sample weight: 30 - 50 kg.
- After taking the sample, it should be placed in a clean, dry bag with a label clearly stating: Type of sand (yellow sand, fine sand, concrete sand...); Origin (manufacturer name, batch number, date of manufacture); Date, time and location of sampling; Sampler. Samples must be stored in a dry place, avoiding direct contact with water or high humidity.

3- CONCRETE:
- According to TCVN 3105:2022, TCVN 10303:2014, TCVN 4453:1995
- Concrete samples are taken from fresh concrete mixture before pouring.
- After collection, the sample must be maintained properly to ensure accurate results.
- Cast a cube test sample measuring 150x150x150 mm or 100x100x100 mm.
- Number of samples: Minimum 3 tablets for each concrete mix.
- Concrete samples must be taken to represent the mixed batch or poured block to check quality. Samples are taken during concrete pouring in the field or at the mixing plant. Sampling time must not exceed 15 minutes from the time the concrete is discharged from the mixing equipment.
- Check for slump (TCVN 3106:2022)
- Check compressive strength (TCVN 3118:2022)
- Check water permeability (TCVN 3115:2022)
4- BRICK:
- According to TCVN 6355-1:2009, TCVN 1450:2009, TCVN 6477:2016, TCVN 10797:2015

Lot ≤ 5000 tablets: Take 10 tablets.

Lot of 5000 - 10000 tablets: Take 15 tablets.

Lot > 10,000 tablets: Get 20 tablets.
a- Terracotta bricks (TCVN 1450:2009, TCVN 6355-1:2009, TCVN 6355-2:2009, TCVN 6355-3:2009, TCVN 6355-4:2009, TCVN 6355-5:2009)
b- Concrete bricks, unburnt bricks (TCVN 6477:2016, TCVN 10797:2015)
5- STONE AND GRAVEL FOR CONSTRUCTION:
- According to TCVN 7570:2006 - Technical requirements for aggregates for concrete and mortar.
The number of samples depends on the volume of the shipment and the purpose of testing:
- Lot ≤ 100 m³: Take at least 50 kg sample.
- Lô 100 - 500 m³: Take at least 100 kg sample.
- Lô > 500 m³: Take at least 200 kg sample.
6- CONSTRUCTION STEEL:
According to TCVN 1651-1:2018, TCVN 1651-2:2018 and related standards TCVN.
- Check shape, size and volume:
- Lot ≤ 20 tons: Take any 1 bar.
- Lot > 20 tons to 60 tons: Take 2 bars from different positions.
- Lot > 60 tons: Take 3 bars from different bundles.
- Physical and mechanical testing (yield limit, tensile strength, elongation, bending, impact, hardness,...)
- Lot ≤ 20 tons: Take any 1 bar.
- Lot > 20 tons to 60 tons: Take 2 bars from different positions.
- Lot > 60 tons: Take 3 bars from different bundles.
